Interview - Kate Barlow, UK Parenting Expert

Kate Barlow, the UK's leading parenting expert was invited by WaterWipes to present some exclusively commissioned research, the first of its kind from the biggest ever survey into modern Irish parenting. You can read some of the details here via MummyPages.

I was invited to meet with her while she was here but was unable to do so, so was offered the opportunity to do a telephone interview. When I knew this was possible I looked forward to speaking with her about a couple of things.

A little bit about Kate

As previously mentioned Kate is one of the UK’s leading Parenting Consultants. She is an expert in helping families overcome common childhood problems such as:
- Toddler tantrums
- Picky eaters
- Potty training
- Bedtime woes

You can learn more about the services Kate offers via her website The Parent Consultancy

A little background to my two little ones!

I'm very lucky to have two healthy (Touch wood) children. Our son is 3 (4 in July) and our daughter is 15 months.
Overall both are fantastic and I know I'm truly blessed. Recently though as some of you will already may be aware their have been changes in our home.
With my husband recently beginning a new job it means his days are a little longer and at times he is required to do over night training, most recently a 5 night trip.
With these changes and also with developmental changes, there has been some "fun" in our home at times!
With some things in mind I was looking forward to asking Kate some questions.

Telephone interview

After we introduced ourselves and I gave her a background of our family the questions proceeded.

1. My sons bedtime routine has changed and separation anxiety has crept in with recent home changes. What would you suggest to get him back to normal which was going to bed without any problems and keeping his door closed as before?

Kate suggested the issue to deal with first was the sleep routine. When there are new habits, it is important to deal with them separately.
A suggestion she made was to introduce the "Sleep Fairy". Give him a letter from the Sleep Fairy and in it tell him how if he keeps his door closed and isn't calling out unless needed that he will get a present.
She went on to say how his calling out was just delay tactics to go asleep and it was important that we were consistent in our approach.

2. With him having changed how he goes to bed he is waking earlier and still tired.

A suggestion Kate made which was something we were thinking of getting was a GroClock. By explaining to him how it works it would give him clear cue's as to when it was time to get up.

3. With his sister being 15 months, what do you recommend for them both regarding sharing.

Kate suggested the following:
  • Use timers for playing with a particular toy and when one child was finished the other could then play with it.
  • When explaining to them about sharing to keep to their level.
  • Try and distract them where possible.
  • Sometimes when they fight it can be a way of seeking attention.
  • Always be fair and when they are playing together to reinforce this with them with praise.

4. What are you suggestions dealing with discipline? Do you think a "naughty step" is a good thing?

  • The general rule of thumb is to praise good behavior and to ignore the bad behavior.
  • With regards the naughty step some children just say sorry to get off it. It can also cause another conflict which is not always a positive thing.
  • Always demonstrate the behavior it is you want.
  • If a child has been hit for instance, give all of the attention to that child. Don.t force a sorry but if they say it themselves, praise them for it.
  • Always reinforce good behavior

5. Dinnertime! What do you suggest when they decide not to eat their dinner even if it is their favorite?

Again a similar formula is coming through with is "praise the good and ignore the bad!
With our son not always eating dinner he is trying to assert his independence.
As Kate said healthy children will eat (thankfully our little fella is a healthy eater)

Kate also said to
  • Take the battle out of it
  • Don't distract him when he says he doesn't want anymore
  • Still offer fruit / yogurt afterwards if you normally do
  • Keep him involved in the conversation
  • Mention how tasty dinner is during conversation
  • Praise when the meal is finished
  • Try a Tapas style dinner giving him independence and control in his choices

6. Starting School - With his separation anxiety recently, we're conscious of what he might be like starting pre-school

Kate explained how its important to not push it.
  • Explain to him that you will be back to collect him.
  • Try and explain to him on a regular basis what his day will be like.
  • Don't say things to him like "I wont be long"
  • Don't sneak off but when you do need to leave
  • Make it clear your leaving, be matter a fact, leave and don't look back
  • At the open day, get numbers off other mums and try and arrange play dates before he starts so there is familiarity.
  • if needs be set up a Facebook page so there is an interaction with the other parents

I must say it was lovely speaking to Kate. A lot of what she had said we were already doing so it was lovely to get reassurance that we're on the right track.
Something I have been noticing more of is to praise more often when my children play together and are doing good. We're also, taking the conflict out of dinner. It can be difficult at times but I must say its easier than asking him continually to "eat his dinner"

Mindfulness for Children

Recently when I was on #Mummypageschat and I met @buddabugzz aka Aislí Madden. Some of you may know Aislí from the RTE TV Series, Domestic Diva's. Well, Aislí has a new project she has been working on and I must say I love the idea. Aislí has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for her new book "Buddabugzz - 'Zenji Heals His Muzzy Bug"

Aislí has spent three years researching, writing and illustrating her first book "Zenji Heals His Muzzy Bug" which is a bedtime story for children. She believes that the book will help children sleep quicker and better than before! This I know for me is music to my ears I must say since my my sons recent change in his bedtime routine.

Watching and listening to Aislí explain the book in her Kickstarter campaign I must say it sounds quite magical and I can understand why children would enjoy it.

I love the idea that the book is all about mindfulness. It makes sense to teach this to our children at young age so that it can help them not only to sleep well but to deal with changes in their lives. We are all aware how important mindfulness is yet we don't always practice it so well.
With children too it can be tough for them as they are going through so many changes that are naturally developmentally and then within their home environment.

I hope that Aislí can make her dream come true and raise the money she needs to spread the word of her Zenji and his upcoming Buddabugzz.

I look forward to soon reading all about Zenji to my own children ..... might even help this tired mammy too!

Check out some recent articles here about Zenji and Aislí's Kickstarter campaign.

Review - Kinder Storymakers.com

I was recently asked by MummyPages if I would like to review Kinder Storymakers.com. On hearing the name, I was quite intrigued and when I asked what it was all about I must say I was quite looking forward to sitting down with my 3 year old and creating his story.

Kinder Storymaker.com is as the same suggests a site where you can create stories with your little ones. When I explained to my son what we were going to be doing he couldn't wait until his sister went for her nap so we could get stuck in!

Once we were logged in the fun began! We followed the steps entering his name and age and from there we chose our character. This was a tough decision as there were some great ones to choose from and there was lots of "pick him, pick him"!!

Once you have chosen your character, the story begins! You have a choice of scenes to chose from to create each page for example Jungle, Under the Sea and the Dessert.

Once you choose your scene from there you are given a choice of three main characters to and three additional smaller ones you can add to create your story.
As you can see from the images below, once you have chosen your main character you have an option of a reply to your character's question or if you wish you can write your own!

In all you create 4 pages before coming to the final page where you are given two options to go home to your street or to your house.

Below, I chose the "Go to my house" option. Here again you have a choice of three characters and again can add some additional characters to the scene.

When you have completed your story, you have the option then to enter a competition where the best story chosen will be published!
You can also download the story you have created or log in to be able to it read again and again via your tablet or laptop.

I must say creating the story was fun. There were lots of options to choose from and it is something I feel I would go back to again and again. For me I think it will be fun to see how creative he gets as he gets older and also too when my daughter is old enough to see what she will create. For my son is happy to chose the standard options available rather than creating his own.

I created the story "The Adventures of Gus the Parrot" which I've downloaded for you to view here

Why not try out Kinder's Storymaker.com with your little one's or maybe create a story for a niece, nephew maybe even a loved one! I think it's a great way to create your individual story and the kids big and small will love seeing their little adventure develop!

Updated: Where it all began!

Before I "Chirped" my journey to blogging began with MummyPages .  In late 2014 I joined in with their #MummyPagesChat on Twitter which is from 10.30am-11.30am, Monday - Friday and Tuesday, 9pm-10pm. Here I've chatted with some great mums and have received great advice, tips and shared stories. Being part of #MummyPagesChat rekindled my love of writing and in October 2014, I plucked up the courage to approach MummyPages to see if there was an opportunity to write for them and as they say, "The rest is History"!.

Since joining MummyPages in October 2014 I have have written a number of pieces which have been published on their MummyBlogger page along with being shared on their Facebook Page.

I now proudly feature their MummyBlogger badge on my own blog and I'd like to thank MummyPages for giving me the opportunity to write for them. It has given me the confidence to believe that there is more to this "Stay at Home Mum" and more for me to grasp with open arms!

I'd like to share these pieces with you here and introduce you to MummyPages if you haven't already stopped by
